The Young Carers Project works with under 19’s in the Cambridge and Ely area who care for and support a family member who have:

• A long-term illness

• Disability

• Mental health problem

• Misuse drugs or alcohol

The Project aims to:

• Work with all young people within the local community, who support a family member in at least one of the ways mentioned above.

• Ensure that the young people on the Project have access to the services they need and are entitled to.

• Ensure the safety of all young people on the Project in line with Centre 33’s Child Protection Policy.

• Respect the right to confidentiality of all young people and their families in line with Centre 33’s Confidentiality Policy.

• Reflect where possible, the governments “Every Child Matters” aims, when supporting young people.

• Raise awareness of issues facing young carers with professional organisations, the local community and the voluntary sector in the region.

• Respect the right of all young carers to have the opportunity for fun and the right to be young people first and carers second.

The Young Carers project offers support through:

• Six fortnightly groups in Cambridge and Ely for young people aged 8-18 years old.

• The ATH (Activities, Trips and Holidays) Project offering the chance to experience a range of exciting activities and trips.

• The 1:1 Project offering individual support to young people when needed.

• A newsletter sent out to all young people on the project every two months.

• Supporting young people by talking to their school or other professionals on their behalf

• A range of established services provided by Centre 33 including Counselling, Information and Advocacy

If you know of a young person who may be interested in being part of the Project or you have any questions about the Project please feel free to contact us.

If you would like to refer a young person to the Young Carers Project, please make sure you have discussed it with the young person in the first instance. Once we have received the completed form we will then arrange to meet with the young person and their family to talk about the Project and answer any questions they may have.
